This is a series for my Senior Drawing Projects class with Jason Holley. I focused on various reproductive systems: snake, cow, horse, bee, fish, bird, flower, etc. I find them fascinating, so much power, and intricacy in such small organs. It makes no sense to me. It is hard to tell on a blog, but they are all large, almost as tall as me. I've never worked so large before. I'll do it again.
fish reproductive systems
This one is quite large, probably 4ft x 5.5ft also. All this is done with poster paint I bought in K-town, that is basically a cheap guasch, and a graphite, alcohol mixture.
This store is so beautiful, with delicate bones, and teeth, carefully placed in tiny plastic bags. Frogs and brains float in jars. I would say I loved it, except for the overweight, tight black dress wearing women who work there--high red heals, and skin covered in tattoos, radiating their unfounded, unmeasured confidence. Kaeleen was there too, I'm sure she would agree :)
so... this is a work in progress. I wanted to redesign the window display for the Anthropology store in Pasadena. I took bizarre measurements of the store one day, using a one foot piece of string, then tried my best to make sense of my scribbled notes. Later I created an illustrator file, and laser cut out the wood pieces, and glued them together. It took forever. I am always doing that--piecing together my own understanding of the world, rather slowly, more awkwardly than the rest. BUT I am really proud of the model! ... anyway, I started with these (also laser cut) wood, made-up letters, and built a little tower on the side, in front of painted animals. My teacher hated it, and told me to start over. Instead it is sort of just sitting on top of my book shelf. I guess I am taking a break, resting, for now.
This is a piece about irrational fears. I have a friend who is scared of musical notes, leaving the page and grabbing on to her body. I'm terrified I'll be mistaken for a guy, even though people tell me over and over it is quite obvious I am a woman. These sort of things, in life, make me happy.
